Posterior Oblique Lumbar Arthrodesis (POLAr™)
The POLAr™ Instrument Set by Zimmer Spine allows a surgeon to place anterior
column support at an oblique angle from a posterior approach. This procedure
offers many advantages including minimal exposure, precise implantation, and
the biomechanics of a construct consisting of anterior column support
combined with pedicle screws.
The procedure is performed via
unilateral exposure, therefore minimizing the exposure requirements over the
traditional bi-lateral procedure. In addition, the instrumentation provides
the surgeon the ability to restore disc height while allowing for an
implementation of a singular cylindrical implant.
The drill tubes
supplied with this set have an angulation of 22.5º. This facilitates the
surgeon's placement of the implants at the desired oblique angle. A central
wedge distractor is also supplied to assist in the placement of the drill
tube. The POLAr drill tubes have paddles utilizing a "Rule of One"
distraction.
For instance, an 11mm implant can be placed with 10mm
distraction maximizing the disc height while minimizing the size of the
implant. The Silhouette™ Spinal Fixation System is used to complete a three
column tension band, resulting in a precisely placed, 360º construct from a
posterior approach with room for autologous bone graft.
